The One with Finding Furniture

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Chris and I took a trip to IKEA on Saturday to start perusing through furniture for the nursery. No buying anything yet, gotta wait for this month's credit card to close! (Don't you just love budgets and dealing with money...or lack thereof haha...). Now the big question is, how to fit everything on our list into this space:
Photobucket
Right now the second bedroom is a guest room/my scrapbook space. I've acquired A LOT of scrapbooking stuff since I was 16 years old, but with good reason. Scrapbooking has been my main source of income since I was 16 and got my first job at a scrapbooking store, and today, 9 years later, scrapbooking in one form or another is still how I bring home the bacon. I would like to keep as much scrapbooking stuff in this room as possible, though I'm thinking the biggest dilemma will be those colorful racks of cardstock...

But anyways, my problems, not yours :)

Here's what we've found that we like:
This green rocking chair:

with this matching footstool:

I've mentioned before but I'll say it again, this second bedroom doesn't have a closet (!!) so we need to fenangle something. We're thinking of buying this cabinet
Photobucket
and then rigging it with a few rods to hang clothes on and placing a few baskets with other smaller clothing items like socks and shoes on the shelves below. Blake we might need your mad carpentry skillz with this project :)

My friend Reyanna made a good point changing tables so we're thinking of ex-naying getting a changing table and buying this ultra cute blue dresser which can be part of Fox's room decor forever.

The drawers are lined with super cute yellow lined paper. I love all the storage it provides and we'll just use the top for a makeshift changing table somehow. Or just use the floor and a changing pad :)

Can't forget about the bedding!

Love the bright colors of this set (not to mention there's a fox on it!)

And curtains! With banners!

Have we decided on a crib yet? That would be a no. I'm fine with this simple white crib from IKEA:

But Chris has something else in mind. We'll see who wins this battle :)

Other than that, I've started collecting little rugs that I'll piece together to make one big rug sort of like this one that inspired the idea:

And I've got a good pile of bright colored frames going with which to make a photo collage on the big empty wall (currently above the paper racks).

I've also got an entire folder of projects I want to make once I quit my part time receptionist job (in just 17 days...but who's counting??).

So things are coming along. After the annual Evans Family Reunion which will take place here in LA in a few weeks, we'll get rid of that bed (any takers?) and start the transformation.

  1. Paige, I love all of your ideas, your nursery is going to be so cute! I love that blue ikea dresser, that's the one we have in black for our tv stand and I love all of the drawers and storage! I'm sure Blake could help you guys with the closet. :)

  3. Oooh, LOVE your ideas so far! When you plan your photo collage on the wall, be sure to make sure you make room for my 10x8 (landscape) gift! :-D I was going to order it yesterday, but I TOTALLY forgot! GAH! I'm calling them now. LOL. :-p

For your paper racks... have you considered simply moving some of the colors together... ? Like... all yellows together? Or... three stacks of yellows? LOL. That may help pare down. And perhaps you can just store those racks some place else for now. With a friend... or if you have storage. :-) I know i wouldn't want to say goodbye to those forever... you will want them in the future, I'm sure. :-)

LOVE the rugs! I would LOVE to do this too! :-) And those curtains?!?!? For real?!?!? Banners?! GAH! SO adorable!

We started looking on Craigslist for a crib (just to get an idea)... there are some REALLY nice ones... like $500-$1000 cribs for like... $100-$150. I checked your CL too, and they're even cheaper! I guess because you have more people, you have people lowering the prices! LOL. Anyway, just a thought.

Oh! One more thing! A friend told me that she wished she had brought a doll or something to "practice" with when she bought her rocking chair. Apparently, when she brought it home, she couldn't even get out of it with a sleeping/nursing baby! She couldn't even use it and had to put in some place else! ACK!

I was SO appreciative of this because I would think one would just need to sit and rock and say, "Looks good! Let's get it!" But now, I'll be sure to practice first... making sure it's easy to get out of and safe and... you know... doesn't wake a sleeping baby. LOL.

LOVE the color of that chair too! I think we're looking at gliders too. :-) Can't wait to see more of your stuff/ideas as you go! :-D

Oh, and LOVE LOVE that blue dresser. Did I already say that?

  5. Love the blue dresser! They sell changing pads that you can bolt to the back of your furniture (if you can't go without it). This is a pricey example, but the only one I found in my quick search: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3256553

The one we had was around $35'ish and you could buy pads to cover it. However, you will only use it a month or two before you decide on the couch or floor with a mat! :)

Another thing I loved in our small space was drawers under the crib. very handy for extra bedding/blankies/stashing of diapers/etc.

Can't wait to see the room when you guys have it done!

  6. The crib is just too plain. It reminds me of a prison cell. :)

  7. That's a sweet idea to get around not having a closet, and best of all, if you guys need my help it means that I get to come hang out! Sounds fun, let me know.
