The One with Cloth or Plastic Diapers

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

At our last baby prep class last night the teacher brought up something that I really hadn't thought twice about: cloth versus plastic diapers.

VERSUS

I'd always assumed I'd just buy plastic diapers; I feel like that's what the majority of people do and I'm all about being a lemming. But the more the teacher talked about the pros and cons of cloth versus plastic, the more I'm thinking about going the cloth route????....Am I crazy??!??! I'll be honest, I'm not a "green" or "granola" girl. I do care about the environment, but I'm more about what's practical for me right here right now. There, I said it. Here is what the handout has to say about cloth diapers:
1. Plastic diapers are not 100% disposable. Whatevs, a lot of things aren't. But perhaps this will be my first step to being more green.
2. Cloth diapers are chemical free, unlike some plastic diapers which may contain a chemical called super absorbent polymer that causes severe skin irritation, oozing blood from the perineum and scrotal tissues, fever, vomiting, and staph infections - no thank you!
3. Supposedly babies can feel their wet or dirty diaper easier in cloth diapers and will let you know when they need to be changed. I fear that if I use plastic diapers I'll forget to check if it's soiled so having Fox cry (hopefully not too loud, haha) when he needs to be changed sounds like a plan to me.
4. This newspaper says that earlier toilet training (up to a whole year earlier in fact) is possible with babies who wear cloth diapers because the child will know that they are wet and will feel uncomfortable. The earlier my kid is potty trained, the less diapers I have to change. That saves me time, money, sanity, and smellies!
5. Cloth diapers result in less diaper rashes due to overheating. I'll do anything to prevent diaper rashes, they look so painful!
6. I don't have to touch the dirty diaper, the whole kit and caboodle goes right in the free pail that's picked up and replaced every week. No need to soak the diaper or anything.

I feel like there's got to be a catch... Do cloth diapers make the baby look more bulky down there? Am I more about fashion or all these other things... Do they leak a lot easier resulting in a lot more clothing needing to be washed? My biggest deal breakers are the potty training factor, saving money, and comfortableness for the baby - can someone guarantee me that all these will come to pass? What's your take on cloth versus plastic diapers? I'd really like to know.

The One with Thickers Love

Monday, August 30, 2010

I may or may not have posted this picture before, I'm too lazy to check :) Once upon a time when I worked at American Crafts the In-House Scrapbookers made layouts on a weekly basis to keep up on our mad scrapbooking skillz. One of the first layouts I made was this one:

I had to get creative thinking of a way to transport the Thickers from the closet to my workspace. My arm did the trick:

Ahhh attack of the Thickers!
No project is complete without them :)

The One with the Nursery's Comin' Along

Saturday, August 28, 2010

Today we were very productive as far as getting ready for little Fox's debut. We still have quite a list of things that need to be accomplished before he comes, but I feel like we took a big dent of the "to do" list. For instance, we assembled the stroller and installed the car seat. Check check! I wasn't thrilled with the configuration of the furniture in the nursery, so I took the liberty of moving it around while Chris was at the church building fulfilling his (I mean, our) calling (we're the ward building cleaning coordinators and every Saturday morning Chris meets a few families at the church, gives them the keys and list of things to do, then peaces out). Here's how it looks right now (the colors are off cuz the lighting is bad cuz it's getting dark):

That table? Gotta go. I will be doing my scrapbooking on the main kitchen table now. So unless I can find someone who wants it, it's going out on the front yard with a "for free" sign tomorrow.

One of the biggest issues about this room is it doesn't have a closet. So today we fashioned this piece of furniture into a custom closet by adding two rods at the top. I ended up taking the lower rod out.
Photobucket
Now I need to get some baskets for all his pants and I think the bottom row will be full of books.

My Grandma Cathie always has a pile of stuff to give me when we go to Utah. This time I noticed she was giving away several rugs and I snatched this one right up:
Photobucket
It's perfect!
So. Now what?
Still waiting on the cushions for the glider and ottoman.
Still have to make my frame collage on the empty wall - but I've made progress spray painting a few more frames.
Still have to take off the bed skirt from the crib cuz it just looks awkward at this point, but it'll go back once we lower the crib.
Still have to wash all his clothes and bedding (that's what you're supposed to do right??).
Still have to return the mini rugs I got from Target and Urban Outfitters cuz I like the big rug better.
Still have to wipe down all the Bernstein Bear books my mom brought me from home.
Still have lots and lots of little things to get....like diapers! And wipes!

Not related, but still worth mentioning, Chris was saying we should consider getting rid of the rabbit, chinchilla, and finch to lessen our load. I said hecks no! How can we get rid of this little creature?!? He's the cutest little bunny wunny on the face of the earth!

I hope I hope I hope we can find the time, energy, and patience to keep a house full of pets with a new baby!!

The One with the Week in Utah

Friday, August 27, 2010

Sorry I've been MIA for nearly 6 days! That's the longest I've ever not blogged and I'm excited to get back into the swing of things. It would have helped if I had brought my camera card reader with me, but it was actually quite nice to take a break and really get some rest and relaxation. Here is what we've been up to the past week in Utah:
Sunday, after church and a delicious curry lunch at the Warners (Grandma's curry is soooooo much better than mine!), we headed up to Park City where we stayed for the week. We passed Bridal Veil Falls on the way and saw lots of people trying to cool off in the mist.
Photobucket
It started raining. Hallelujah. We were in some serious need of a weather change.
Photobucket
Park City is such a cute ski town.
Photobucket
Each of these houses could sell for over a million bucks. Wowzers.
Photobucket
Main Street.
Photobucket
Me 'n my li'l sis. Do you think we look alike? I sorta see a resemblance.
Photobucket
Monday morning we went with Eric and Tanya to Salt Lake to the Gateway to drop off my ring to get it cleaned.
Back in Park City we went to the outlet mall and shopped, I finally picked out a cute baby bag, then we ate dinner at Cafe Rio. I swear it tastes better in Utah than it does in California...
Tuesday morning we headed to Orem and stopped at Target to get Mocking Jay and LOST season 6. Priorities people. I have to get my loot.
Photobucket
Then we went to the Animal Ark because I can't resist. They had an entire plastic swimming pool of baby bunnies and guinea pigs out front. Tempty tempty!
Photobucket
Pile'o'bunnies! Soooooo stinkin' cute!
Photobucket
Didju know they're building a Texas Roadhouse at the University Mall? That's almost enough to make Chris quit school and get us to move back to Utah!
Photobucket
Then Chris dropped me off at American Crafts and I had a blast visiting with everyone and seeing all the new people and peeking at the latest and greatest product. I want my box of goodies NOW!
For lunch we all went to a new restaurant called Cafe Paesan which supposedly was started by the same people who started Cafe Rio. It was very very good. I'd definitely recommend it and go back in the future.
Photobucket
After lunch Alisha took me to the new Scrapbook Trends office. This is the computer that I link up to a good chunk of my day. It's funny to see it in real life rather than remotely.
Photobucket
Chris picked me up then we went to the BYU Creamery on 9th to get some ice cream. Best. Ice. Cream. Ever. I got cookies and cream and Chris got marionberry. We devoured our scoops in minutes.
Photobucket
We cruised around campus, browsed through the bookstore, then went to Crest so Chris could get his daily Mt. Dew.
Photobucket
Back at Park City, my family wanted to go on a "walk" up to the old mining scene. Park City was originally a silver mine town and a lot of the mines have just been left to rust. It was fun to see these old abandoned parts and imagine what they would have looked like back in the day when they were still functioning.
Photobucket
Tracks.
Photobucket
Yeah. That door says "explosives" on it...
Photobucket
One of my favorite video games is Super NES Donkey Kong and one level you ride through a mine tunnel in a cart just like this.
Photobucket
I don't know what this is, but it's neat!
Photobucket
This house-turned-storage-facility was super creepy inside.

STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT!

The floors are covered in garbage and core samples. And rat poop. I got out of there quickly after taking pictures cuz I didn't want to breathe that crap in.
Photobucket
Eric's the king of the world!
Photobucket
Us.
Photobucket
Cool building.
Photobucket
It would not be a good idea to grab these window frames! That glass would cut right through your hands!

Me and my baby belly via shadow.

Wednesday was my cousin Maren's wedding day and the reason for us being in Utah in the first place. I'm so glad we actually made it (unlike last year when we missed Sara Jayne's wedding cuz Jadis escaped...). We walked through the beautiful Joseph Smith Memorial Building to get to the temple.
Photobucket
Salt Lake City Temple.
Photobucket
The sealing was incredible. I don't remember mine at all, I was just too darn nervous, so it was good to see how marriages happen again. I cried. I didn't even cry at my own sealing!
Here is the new Mr. and Mrs. Theodore.
Photobucket
Don't they just look so happy and in love? :)
Photobucket
Eric and Tanya outside the Lion House where we ate a delicious wedding lunch.
Photobucket
The reception was held on the top floor of the The Point at the U of U.
Photobucket
It was beautiful. And supposedly the wedding sign in book that I made for Maren was a success. Phew! So much pressure! :)
Photobucket
That's my cousin once removed Alli and my grandma Doris. I think they look like carbon copies of each other!
Photobucket
Thursday we went to Olympic Park and saw skiers practicing on these wooden jumps, do fancy tricks in the air, then land in the pool.
Photobucket
I've never wanted to go swimming so badly in my life. Doesn't that water look so inviting? Especially when it's so darn hot outside!
Photobucket
We went to the outlets again for a minute, cruised through Deer Valley, then took a nap at the hotel. Then we packed up and headed to Provo to meet Eric and Tanya for dinner and a movie.
Would you like some fries with that fry sauce? Burger's Supreme has the best fries and fry sauce EVER.
Photobucket
Then we went and saw a movie at the dollar theater: How to Train Your Dragon. I am so embarrassed by this but I actually had nightmares last night that I was being chased by a huge dragon! I always get nightmares after watching Jurassic Park so I guess this is just a similar reaction. Even if it was a cartoon...
Photobucket
Today we drove back to LA.
Photobucket
So now we're home and enjoying our last couple days of freedom before school starts again. And before this baby comes! In 7 weeks! Where has the time gone???....
