Only a few more days left of Chris's break so we're going to try to squeeze a lot in! Today we drove to the other side of LA to visit The Getty. Even though it's only 20 miles away, it might as well be in another part of the country a) because it takes 4ever to get there (or anywhere in SoCal for that matter!) and b) because the lifestyle is so different. It feels like any direction you go is a completely different place. 20 miles one way and you're at Disneyland. 20 miles another way and you're at the beach. 20 miles another way you're in the mountains. 20 miles another way you're in the desert. 20 miles another way you're in the hood. 20 miles another way you're in Beverly Hills. At one point while driving the freeway split off into 6 (SIX!!) different freeways! Where to go where to go?
California is such a diverse and unique place! Anyways, where was I? Oh yeah, we went to The Getty. I had no idea there were so many buildings - it was overwhelming! (I s'pose I could have researched a bit before going...) I couldn't get a pic of the entire place so here's one from online:
Admission is free but parking is $15 - if you go with more people you can split the cost. Either way it's totally worth it! We found a spot and then made our way up to the tram which then took us up to the museum set atop a hill.
Here's the first piece of art we found. Me likey.
The entrance.
Downtown. The LA skyline is just barely visible in the middle left.
A nice shady place to eat and mingle.
We didn't even know where to begin! So Chris became the tour guide and I followed closely behind with my camera.
Here's a collage of some of the artwork I liked:
The top right picture is called "Portrait of Alfonso d'Avalos, Marquis of Vasto, in Armor with a Page" - I'm Paige!
The Evans family at The Getty - 8.23.11
Looking down at the cafe.
Waterfall.
Then we took a walk through the gardens.
We made a quick pitstop at the giftshop wherein I saw these intricate metal thingamajigs:
Here's a closer look:
Neato right?!?
And I'm pretty sure this necklace was calling my name. Alas, my wallet was not :)
A 3-part view of LA from The Getty.
After The Getty we headed down the street to try out Fat Sal's for lunch. It deserves a post all of it's own though so that's what's up to bat tomorrow!
Looks like such a cool place:) Thanks for sharing the pics with us!
ReplyDeleteWow... so fun! The view is amazing... ha, and sooo is that bed! Love the pictures, Paige! Glad you are enjoying!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like soooo much fun!!!
ReplyDeleteIs it really only 20 miles away? I don't believe it for a moment! Feels more like 35 which is a huge difference from 20 right?! I also though Disneyland was 35 miles but who knows?!
ReplyDeleteLooks beautiful! Funny I would never think of going to the Getty - I was scarred at a young age by my architect father who would take me to all sorts of museums, hence I actually abhor museums and actually can remember going to the Getty with my family when it first opened, bored out of my mind with my lil brother, waiting to go home! HAHAHA The only part we liked was the tram thing. But maybe it's worth going back now that I'm a grown up hehe.
Getty Villa next?
ReplyDeleteFun! We still need to check out the Getty while we're here!
ReplyDeleteThe grounds and the views at The Getty are my favorite part of that place. Side note! David's and my 2nd date was to The Getty! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThese are so great and take me back to a visit to the Getty when I was in college ('SC '92, I'm ancient, lol!) Thanks for sharing them!!
