The One with the Scrapbook Purge

I have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much scrap crap :)
I've been hoarding it since I was 16, so 11 years now (wait, lemme double check my math, 27 - 16 = 11. Had to think about it - my brain is getting rusty!). I get most of it for free from being on various design teams, publication product compensation, guest spots, etc. With more new stuff coming in, it's time to let the old go. And this time I'm getting rid of anything I haven't used that I've held onto for over two years. Out with the old, and in with the new! Plus, we're moving in 9 months and I'd like to pack the least amount of stuff as possible. Goodness knows where we're moving to though, we haven't heard from the Army about anything. Maybe they've forgotten about us, ha!
Now the question is, what to do with all this STUFF!?
Photobucket
I have about 100 packs of retired Thickers (most are missing some letters),
Photobucket
dozens of pieces of patterned paper, even some entire collections!,
Photobucket
about 20 packs of unused stamps (stamping just isn't my forte!),
Photobucket
a couple of Mister Huey's spray mists that I had doubles of, countless packs of stickers, chipboard, die cuts, punches, flowers, embellishments, and more and more and more! It's all a mess right now as I'm purging so sorry there aren't better pictures.

What would you do?
At this point I'm about to just haul it down to the trash rather than deal with it cuz time is a precious commodity these days! But I'll get some input first before I do something that drastic :)
Give it away to friends?
Give it away on my blog?
Sell it piece by piece on ebay, my blog, or Craigslist (cuz who couldn't use a bit of extra moola?)?
Donate it to a good cause?

  1. I've donated to our elementary school, I've donated to church things where they need scrapbooking stuff, I've given away to friends--I'd say whatever was the easiest! (I've got a couple of boxes waiting to be taken to various locations myself!) good luck!

  2. Send it to me!!!!

I mean I would love that, but practically speaking here are my thoughts. If you don't want to itemize/post/sell individual stuff you could do grab boxes. I know some people sell them, although I'm not generally inclined to buy grab boxes myself because I usually like to know what I'm getting in the boxes and that would defeat the purpose of getting rid of it quickly. I WOULD however, and I bet most people would pay the shipping on a random box of stuff if they won it.

And, at least for the stickers, and especially thickers with a lot of letters missing, look no futher than Fox. Kids + stickers = at least a few minutes of quiet...

  3. I would say offer one price flat rate boxes on your blog. This has seemed to work really well for other well known bloggers needing to get rid of the excess. Who doesn't like a surprise grab bag? I know I LOVE them!

I usually donate to the children's ward of the local hospital. UCSF has a fabulous program for the families of children admitted for long periods of time. The hospital gives them scrapbooks, embellishments, etc and hosts crops for them to work on preserving the memories. I love this idea, because no matter the path, there are still memories to be cherished and I try to donate to them as much as possible.

  5. Maybe you could do more than one thing? Like, save a little and do a giveaway on your blog. Then give some to a local charity - like a children's hospital or after school program (I give some of my purging to our local Girls, Inc. program - they always really appreciate it!), then (especially with the "good stuff") you could either have a yard sale (these do REALLY well in my hometown, but it depends on where you live...when I do it, I list scrapbooking items in my ad in the paper and people come from all over!!) or divide it up into bigger grab boxes, take a picture and sell on your website or ebay or craigslist. I wouldn't fool with trying to sell that much individually unless I did it in one whack (like a yard sale!) Too many pictures & listings to try to post individually online!

  6. I say give it away on your blog using those flat rate boxes. Ask the winners to pay the flat rate. Heck I'll take two. I love surprises (and stamps!)

  7. It would kill me if you told me you had hauled it down to the trash. You could definately sell it - it's worth a fortune!!! And the stuff you think might not sell I know the teachers at your local schools would appreciate sooooo much - at least if they have as little money for things like that as we teachers have here in Sweden. I have to collect wallpaper catalogues to have "patterned paper" to work with for when I teach "Papercraft classes" as a "free choice" subject (or whatever it is called in English)at my school.

  10. i say give it away to a school, girls club or someone that would enjoy it. By giving it away to a charity you don't have to worry about postage. I know a bunch of young girls would have fun with that stash. I know, I know - have a Paige class here in LA to show off your awesome scrapping skills. That would be fun:)

  11. These are all great ideas! I'm sure if you gave them to the YW president in your ward, she would be thrilled. YW are always in need of scrapbooking supplies for birthdays, activities, camp, etc. But don't throw anything out!! If you sell grab bags from your blog, I would buy one :)

  12. Why not try to sell it on your blog and via facebook in grab boxes? Price it decently and I am sure you will sell it fast. Post it on your blog here and than link in the 2 groups on facebook I've seen. I could add you to them if you want. I bet they would sell and anything that doesn't you could donate. You just need to know how much postage is so be like this blah by blah box is $40 with $blah postage to the US... It would be nice if you could find a teenager to babysit for free in exchange for scrappy stuff! :>

  14. As much as I would love to dig into your stash LOL I think the best idea is to donate it to a school or a church!!

  15. Give it to your mom. Or your little sister. That way, you can use it when you visit them at home. Seriously.

  16. As nice as selling it might be, giving it to a charity would feel really good! I would find a home or program where pregnant teenagers live/go and donate it to them. They have NO money and would probably love to scrapbook the first few months.

  17. I did this just before my husband was relocated to a new state. I ended up packing up 8 paper grocery bags and donating it to a women's and children's shelter for their craft corner!

  18. EEEEEEEK!! I sure wish I was a neighbor so I could take it off your hands!! :) Personally, I'd donate it to a womens shelter or childrens hospital or something along those lines. Or maybe a church with a childrens bible school program could use it to make cards for a retirment home or something???

  19. I have the same scene in my scrap space right now. I'm sending a bunch down to Jamaica to a scrappy friend then the rest will get sold at my yard sale. Good luck re-locating it all Paige!

  20. My mom is really big into crochet and had the same problem with yarn. Seriously, we had floor-to-ceiling boxes of yarn slowly taking over our family room. She ended up donating it to a battered women's shelter that was teaching women to knit and crochet.

  21. I've seen a lot of people selling grab boxes on their blogs. Just flat rate boxes full of stuff.

For older stuff, I do save a good amount for my kids. We use it to make cards for special occasions or school projects. I've also donated boxes of stuff to girl scouts and to schools.

  22. I would give the paper to a daycare. I've done that before and they are always so grateful.

  23. Give it away on the blog! Haha! I'd sell it, give it away, or donate. Speaking of donating, have you thought about your local library? Where I live, libraries have all sorts of learning activities throught out the month. I'm sure scrapbooking would be something cool for people to participate in and learn. Expose more of the community to it. Good luck in whatever you choose to do. Just don't trash it. I'd cry!

  24. I'm in the same boat as you and have been compiling boxes of stuff as well. It's just gotten out of hand. My daughter's teacher has scrapbook paper on her teacher wish list so I'll be giving her a lot of it. I also keep a stash for my girls to get crafty with and it's in their own boxes so no need to get into my stuff. I'd like to do a series of blog giveaways but I really don't want to pay to get rid of it. The other ladies had a great idea though about offering it with the disclaimer that they pay shipping. I love all the ideas!

  25. My daughter has surgeries at a Children's Hospital and when I de-stash, I ALWAYS take it to the hospital -- they have 6 craft rooms for the kids that are there full term ... maybe you have a Children's Hospital too that you can donate it to? :)

  26. Put together boxes in a flat rate box and sell them! I am sure people would buy one...I would!! LOL :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would sort it all into different piles to sell and put them in the flat rate boxes! If you don't want to do this, than I would suggest you donate it :)

  29. Do you have a local YMCA that has an after school program? I used to work for the YMCA and we always loved crafty donations, the kids loved to make pages as part of their "art and craft" time, I don't work there anymore, but I still do donate all my extra scrappy stuff and they LOVE it..also I think Goodwill will take that stuff to, ours here has a section in the back with lots of crafty things that they sell really cheap, gives everyone a chance to craft.

  30. A donation would be cool, but if you're looking for extra cash you could always sell those stamps on Ebay... those aren't cheap!

  31. I can totally relate!! And I don't even get free goodies, so I can imagine the piles!! I purge every once in a while. I'll want to get crafty SO bad and then see things I havent touched in forever & go crazy pulling things out. I always want to stack it up and do huge giveaways on my blog... but then the pile sits there forever and I end up donating it to my church or my kids' preschool. The teachers LOVE it when I do!! Stamps aren't good for that because they don't have the respources (acrylic blocks & ink) but the patterned paper & stickers are GREAT for that. Hope that helps :) Good luck & hope you're feeling good. Baby Jane is adorbs =) hope Fox is enjoying being a big bro.

  33. Hi. I'd try to sell what I can and donate the rest to Sunday School for kids or something. I know kids from my sunday school class would be happy to play with that stuff (they are 5)

  34. I'd go the Craigslist route and make sure to tell all of us when you do! South Pasadena is just a hop, skip and a jump from me and I would SO love to buy those Thickers ;)
