The One with Seehof Palace, Germany

Saturday, September 14, 2013

I found a website called schloesser.bayern.de and there it lists all of the palaces and castles in Bavaria (that's the part of Germany we live in). YAHTZEE! JACKPOT! GOLD MINE!
I know what we'll be doing for the next....DOZENS!....of Saturdays!
On this particularly foggy and rainy Saturday morning we drove an hour and a half to just outside the city of Bamberg to see the Seehof Palace.
We made it!
Seehof Palace is the former summer residence of Bamberg's prince-bishops.

 Looking back.
In the 1600s the palace was surrounded by immaculate gardens with mazes and labyrinths and statues and fountains. Now they're mostly flat grasslands.
Some places still have pretty trees.
We walked through this shady grove up to the palace.
Can I live here please?

We walked around the grounds for a bit and then went inside and bought our tickets for the 35 minute tour.
We had about a half hour before the tour so we went out the back and came across not one, not two, but THREE different couples getting their wedding pictures taken. Honest to goodness, every Saturday every place we have been we have seen brides!
The magical fountains.

Janey being cute as we waited for our guide.

They were MUCH better behaved today than last Saturday, thank heavens!

Admiring the stucco.

Inside the palace the rooms were detailed and ornate and fancy, just as palaces should be!
Wowzers.
Every room had a different patterned wood floor.

Loving the floral printed fabric walls and the ginormous beds.

More of the rooms.

Our tour was in German, but we had a piece of paper with English info on it so we could understand what was going on and what we were seeing. But we had to give the paper back so I don't really have many (or any) details about these rooms. People lived here once upon a time :)

Looking out to the palace grounds and the fountain.

I felt like I was in a scene from Pride & Prejudice all the while we were here!

  8. Reasons why I'm jealous:
    1. You're all wearing coats and jackets, which means it's not 90+ degrees in September.
    2. YOU'RE AT A FREAKING PALACE
    3. You and Jane are so precious and adorable in those last few photos!!

And that TOOOOTALLY could have been Lady Catherine de Burgh's house, a very fine manor of which I'm sure you've heard--the one and only Rosings Park! Ah, Pride and Prejudice.

  9. you totally DO look like you're straight out of P&P! so jealous! because i plan on eating up all of your future palace posts... my suggestion to you is to take a picture of your info paper... if it's allowed. i typically take pictures of papers i think i'm going to misplace... but you could totally take a picture of a paper to get details on a palace, right?! thanks for the posts! i feel like i'm traveling through europe with you!

  10. You have to go see Neuschwanstein Castle! It's probably one of the most beautiful castles in Europe, though farther to the south of where you went...
