The One with Noble Paiges: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Saturday, July 19, 2014

Our 3rd book discussion is GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn which is a crazy, intense, mysterious, grab-your-seat-by-the-edge-and-squeeze-as-tight-as-you-possibly-can book! Every chapter kept getting better and better and more intriguing.

Synopsis On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

QUESTIONS:
1. Did you ever think that Nick killed Amy?
Absolutely! Especially the more we found out about him and his lies and deceit.

2. What did you think of Amy's disappearance plan? Was it believable? Were you surprised that she was actually alive?
I think if you spend an entire year planning for something it could happen, even if it was as wild and crazy as Amy's. I think too many things could have gone wrong though and in the end she would have been found. But if makes for a great story to have everything go just right. Was I surprised she was actually alive? Well, I'll be honest, I flipped through some pages and saw she was alive, so in that moment it surprised me, but then leading up to it I was so interested to see how it all played out.

3. What did you think of Amy overall? She had a lot of people in her past that she tricked and manipulated. Do you think one person could plan all of that stuff and be that devious?
I think Amy is psycho! They both are in their own way! Perhaps that's why they're perfect for each other. I mean, who deliberately hurts themselves (multiple times over the years) and blames it on somebody else just to punish them? Crazy crazy crazy.

4. What did you think of the ending - of Nick and Amy staying together?
I could have used a more resolved ending. Tell me what happened two years later. I don't think think I'd be able to live with someone as crazy as Amy or as deceitful as Nick - living in fear all day long that the other person would murder me. Because Amy murdered somebody! Ahhhh!

5. Gone Girl is going to be a movie! They've selected Ben Affleck as Nick and Rosamund Pike as Amy. Do you think they'll do a good job? Here's a trailer:

The movie looks like how I imagined the story in my mind's eye to a "T"! I can't wait to see it!

  1. 1. Did you ever think that Nick killed Amy?

I mostly just thought he was a horrible person, but he didn't seem particularly like a killer. I thought the killer might have been a second-tier character like his sister or girlfriend, though.

    2. What did you think of Amy's disappearance plan? Was it believable? Were you surprised that she was actually alive?

Yeah, I also skipped ahead a bit, so I wasn't surprised. She really put a lot of work into that plan, so I think it's believable that it worked out so well at the start. I think it's also believable that it started to fall apart.

    3. What did you think of Amy overall? She had a lot of people in her past that she tricked and manipulated. Do you think one person could plan all of that stuff and be that devious?

She was really, really scary to me. Finding out more about her friend from high school and the ex-boyfriend was chilling. Her parents helped create that with the books, but basically, any time she succeeded at ruining someone's life it just made her worse and worse.

    4. What did you think of the ending - of Nick and Amy staying together?

I didn't need either of them to have a happy ending, but I wanted one of the cops to whisk the baby away to protective custody!

    5. Gone Girl is going to be a movie! They've selected Ben Affleck as Nick and Rosamund Pike as Amy. Do you think they'll do a good job?

I think that this is extremely well casted!

  3. 1. Did you ever think that Nick killed Amy?
at first I did, I wanted to believe him but I totally thought he was guilty!!!

    2. What did you think of Amy's disappearance plan? Was it believable? Were you surprised that she was actually alive?
that was QUITE a plan, I honestly don't know how someone could plan so much, I guess you can if you set your mind to something!! all the details, esp the dairy were pretty crazy.

    3. What did you think of Amy overall? She had a lot of people in her past that she tricked and manipulated. Do you think one person could plan all of that stuff and be that devious?
she is crazy!!! esp at the end that was just so over the top, and to do all of that!! totally insane.

    4. What did you think of the ending - of Nick and Amy staying together?
I wanted Nick to be able to leave so bad, maybe even kill her (is that bad to say) because I didnt want to see her win and get away with it at all. I was hoping to get a bit more closure.

    5. I can NOT wait for the movie!! I'm sooo excited!! I didn't watch the tailor till I was done with the book because I wanted to create the characters in my head first. The cast looks great..

thanks sooo much for posting this book I loved it!!!

  6. I read Gone Girl so so long ago but reading your questions and answers brought me right back into it. It was a good book but the ending was just horrible.

It is so hard to say what my favorite book is. I don't have an all time favorite, just lots of most favorites that I just read. Recently Orphan Train is the one. Read it! It is a great book and quick read.

  7. 1. Nope. I thought the author was trying to lead the reader that way just a little too hard, so I was skeptical. I wasn't sure who killed her, or if she was even dead, but I was pretty sure it wasn't Nick.

    2. She would have to be psychotically OCD to be able to pull of that plan. But, Flynn wrote the character that way so I guess it was believable. As far as Amy being alive, I always assumed that was a possibility.

    3. Same answer as about as to whether I think she could have planned that. Amy, or Diary Amy, began as a very sympathetic character. But by the end of the novel I kind of wish Nick actually had taken care of the psycho. lol

    4. Didn't like them staying together. Nick needed to get some revenge on that loony toon!

    5. Sure. Ben Affleck has had a career transformation and seems to be a solid actor/director now. Rosamund Pike is a little older than I had Amy pictured, and it'll be interesting to see if she can pull off the chilling insanity of Amy.
