Our last stop in Greece was the island of Cephalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece. Every evening the boat had a destination guide to all the ports of call left on our bed and earlier in the cruise I noticed a picture of a super cool blue, green lake on the front of one pamphlet. When we found out that lake was on Cephalonia we booked an excursion out to go see it. Yay!
An entrance has been carved out of the rock down to the lake. The water was unbelievably blue and looked like a jewel from the darkness of the tunnel.
Groups of about 12 people at a time are loaded up on little rowboats then expert oarsmen take you across the two areas of the lake and offer facts and commentary. The cave and lake form a kind of "cenote" like feature with a vertical shaft that is open to the sky and allows sunlight to pour in.
A quick video of us on the boat. Cameras just can't capture the blue or clarity of the water.
Rowing back out into the sun from the deeper part of the cave.
It was a beautiful, fascinating location.
As we were driving back to Argostoli we caught some glimpses of beautiful beaches on the island.
Our family in the Melissani Cave, Greece on Wednesday August 31st, 2016.
Then we explored the town the boat docked at: Argostoli!
Wow wow wow! That is some BLUE water! Looks like pool water with all the chemicals and paint on the walls that make it look that blue! So gorgeous!!!!!!!
