I asked the two designers sharing projects this week to feature cut files and of course Missy Whidden knocked it out of the park!
Hey there, friends! Missy here, and this week we are using our Silhouette Cameos to create fun designs on our layouts. I use my Cameo quite a bit. It has been one of my favorite scrappy tools for the past few years now and it has really opened the door to so many new ideas. One of my favorite techniques is using it to create fun background designs. I found a fun pie chart cut file in the Silhouette Store and repeated the shape a few times in different sizes. I decided to use Paper 19 from Oh My Heart as my background. The bright pink just jumped out at me and I wanted to challenge myself to not use white cardstock. The fun part about cutting a shape onto a background is using lots of other patterned papers to back the open spots! I used lots of the Oh My Heart 6x6 Paper Pad as well as Paper 01, Paper 07, and Paper 16. I wanted to add some watercolor so I smudged a lot of white gesso around the page (mainly around the pie charts). I used some spray inks and gelatos to create that messy watercolor effect.
Here you can see all the fun colors and patterns from all the papers. It’s fun going through them all to see which little bits you want to use. I incorporated all the fun bright colors and made sure they were all spaced out. To make the pie charts stand out a bit more I machine stitched around them with yellow thread. This just gives it a little bit more texture, interest, and color. I went through so many embellishments for my title area and decided to use some of the Oh My Heart Chipboard Stickers and Thickers, some Take Me Away Chipboard Stickers, and some Fancy Free fussy cut flowers from Paper 01. For my journaling I printed it on vellum and created strips.
This did take some time to back all the pie charts, but I think it was worth it. The end result is always so satisfying to see! Plus, you get to use lots of different colors and patterns without it being too busy or overwhelming. It’s also a great way to use up tiny scraps! The gesso and watercolor really gave the layout more texture and a softer feel.
I love the challenge of going through all the embellishments from all of Paige’s collections and putting pieces together that match. I knew since my background was bright pink that a yellow title would look great and pop right off the page. Right away I knew I wanted to use the “fantastic” piece from the Take Me Away Chipboard Stickers; it pairs perfectly with the Oh My Heart Thickers. Again, those fussy cut Fancy Free flowers were the perfect size and color to create a little cluster. I layered some tangled thread under them as well as some Fancy Free Buttons.
I hope this gives you some fun inspiration and ideas for using your Cameo to create background designs! It’s really fun to do and it helps your design come together quicker because once you have your background, the rest tends to fall into place. Be sure to check out my process video if you’d like to see how this layout came together.
