Not only is Missy Whidden amazing at scrapbook layouts and mini albums, she can also add DIY/home decor to her repertoire of creative genius! Check out this beautiful heart wall art she created using my second collection with Pink Paislee that released last summer called Take Me Away
Hey there, friends! Missy here, and I’m sharing an off-the-page project featuring the Take Me Away collection. At first I was a little skeptical of what I would come up with since my first love is scrapbook layouts. I decided to incorporate the things I love about layouts into a piece of wall art, so it still has my favorite techniques and products on it! I began by cutting a heart from a thick piece of kraft cardstock. I wanted to paint it and decorate it with pieces from the Take Me Away collection. I thumbed through the papers and discovered Paper 14 which has the gorgeous roses that are perfect for cross stitching. So that’s where I started. I spent a few days using embroidery thread to stitch through all those little Xs. I love how it turned out! I fussy cut them out and went from there. I painted the heart with some white acrylic paint and then used various Shimmerz sprays and some gelatos to color it.
I just love how the stitching turned out! I did have some very sore fingers after doing this, but it was worth it… haha! I added a bit of color to the white space of the flowers with the inks and my water brush. I think it gave them an even more dimensional effect. I added some foam under them to raise them up and then added some golden yellow tangled thread. I chose a few die cut pieces from the Ephemera Die Cuts and also added a Fabric Bow. I decided to do a little more fussy cutting, so I cut a few flowers & stems from Paper 02 and tucked those in.
I love how rich and bold the colors are on the heart’s background. I used colors that were in the stitched flowers and then just added darker and lighter shades. I also added some gold splatters. I cut a small embroidery hoop from Paper 20 and tucked that in the center of the upper right floral cluster. I also did some machine stitching around the heart’s edge with metallic gold thread.

You could create this with cardstock or even recycle some thin cardboard, like from a cereal box. I think the thickness makes it a little sturdier. It holds the paint and spray inks very well. I was so pleased with how this turned out! Sometimes it’s fun to think outside the box and do something different! And I think these colors and flowers together are just beautiful.

I hope this inspires you to get outside your comfort zone and play around with something other than a layout! I really enjoyed putting this together!

Like Missy, I've been having fun lately dabbling in other crafts besides traditional scrapbook layouts - mainly mini albums! I have sooooo many travel photos that need to come out of the computer and onto paper and I'm gettin' my minis on :) Will share more soon! Thanks again to Missy - her talent never ceases to amaze me!
